I can't wait to try this one. I'm planning on also raising Talapia too if possible.

Homemade Bar Soap
Homemade bar soap
Mix 2.3 oz 100% lye drain opener with 7 oz COLD water. BE CAREFUL IT GETS VERY HOT! Heat 16oz lard, shortening, olive, or whatever kind of oil you want. Let both cool to about room temp. Put oil into blender. Slowly add lye mixture to oil. Add a tsp of essential oil, 1 Tbs honey, 1/3 cup oatmeal, and blend. Check it often til it thickens up like pudding. Once it comes to a trace pour into soap mold or square plastic dish. Let set 24 hrs, cut into bars, remove from container. Set aside somewhere to cure, about 6 wks. Enjoy! :)
Adding a tsp sugar to lye mixture will make your bars lather when used. If you want plain soap, don't add the honey, oatmeal, or essential oil. If you want you can add dried parsely flakes, powdered milk, etc.

by Back to the Basics--Hope for the best, Prepare for the Worst on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 11:11pm
You can save lots of money using these homemade softeners, I know I do!
LAUNDRY SOFTENER
Recipe #1
2 Cups White Vinegar
2 Cups Baking Soda
4 Cups Water
Combine slowly and carefully over sink. The baking soda and vinegar will fizz. Pour into plastic bottle, cover, and shake.
*Hint - Reuse your "Downy" bottle. (I also reuse my Downy bottle, fill with vinegar and add a couple of tbsp of Downy to make it smell like Downy, or you can use essential oils. Good thing is, even if you don't put anything in it besides vinegar, you clothes DO NOT smell like vinegar-B2B)
Use 1/4 cup in the final rinse or in a "Downy Ball".
Recipe #2
2-3 Cups Water
1 Cup Liquid Fabric Softener
Large Sponge
Combine water and liquid softener. Cut sponge in 1/2 and keep in liquid. When drying clothes, remove sponge, squeeze out excess liquid and place in dryer with clothes. When dry, just place sponge back in liquid to be used for next load.
Recipe #3
1 ½ Cups vinegar
2 Cups hair conditioner (any kind)
3 cups hot water
a few drops of Lavender and Lemon oil
You can also use these products alone to soften:
Plain White Vinegar - Add 1/2 cup to final rinse.
Baking Soda - Add 1/4 cup to final rinse.
Regular Fabric Softener - Dilute and use normally.
Hair Conditioner or Cream Rinse - Pour 1 tablespoon into damp washcloth and toss in with clothes.

First snow of 2011
We had our first snow of the year on the 20th. We have 5 inches and it's still all over the place. Usually it melts away within a day but not this time and I've hear on weather.com that we're suspose to get more tonight and tomorrow night also.
Yikes!!!
I hope this means lots of green pasture this coming spring and summer and the hay field grows bales and bales of fresh hay for the coming winter.

We've got Snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got up at 5 am this morning w/o a flake of snow, went about my business and the next time I checked outside at 9 am there was snow everywhere.
I now have a shade half open and I see the flakes just coming down like crazy once more.
Everyone is staying nested in their warm cozy beds this morning including my son Logan. Well he did get up to see the snow. I don't think he was to thrilled with it either.
I took several pictures this morning and am going to post them. The land is just beautiful when it first snows and nothing has walked on it yet.
I hope you all have a wonderful day too, be safe and keep warm.

Crippled Lamb
We were given a crippled lamb saturday afternoon. She couldn't stand on her front legs at all. She had been born earlier that day, one of triplets. The other two were bouncing all over with their momma when we went to pick her up.
She's a beautiful example of a black headed Dorper w/ very few black markings on her legs.
I've gotten her to stand up for a minute at a time several times today and am very optomistic that she will survive.
I have been trying to find anything online that I might do for her to help her regain the strength in her front legs.
I'll try to get some pictures of her tomorrow.
We're calling her Hope is she lives.

I'm still looking for LaMancha doelings or young does to add. I'm wanting to start making goat's milk soap.

Accomplishments
I made my first batch of laundry detergent yesterday and did my first load of laundry with it this morning. I am very pleased with myself, LOL, and with how well the detergent turned out.
I used 1/2 cup of Borax 20 Mule Tean, 1/2 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda,(found at Ramey's in West Plains), and a bar of Ivory soap (probably could have used less soap but I wanted strong detergent), 2 gallons of water. I boiled 1/2 a gallon of water with the grated bar of soap till dissolved then added the Borax and Washing Soda, stirring till dissloved then added the additional water. I then poured it into a 5 gal bucket and made a second batch to add since there was plenty of room. I let it set over night and the next day it had gelled, I just stirred really well before using.I used about 1/2 cup in my washer.
Tomorrow I'm making dish detergent.
1/2 cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
1/2 cup 20 Mule Team Borax
4 packets lemonade flavor Kool-Aid powder (unsweetened – I buy the off-brand)
1/4 cup salt (Kosher salt recommended)
Directions:
Pour it all into a resealable container and shake it up. Use 1 tablespoon per cycle.
Need a rinse aid? Use vinegar.

2nd day of a new year
We're still on lamb/kid watch, I have two does and two ewes starting to bag up. I have my back-up colostrum, and sav a kid, and sav a lamb ready along with new nipples.
To say the least I'm excited.
Our pet ewe, Matilda (aka Tilly) is also expecting her first lamb. I hope to be there with her when she goes into labor. Matilda's ewes will stay here and any rams will be sold or weathered and put into the freezer.
LOL I'll have to get a second ram just for Matilda's girls if she has alot of them.
After, selling the others, we now have 5 Katahdin ewes, 2 Katahdin yearling ewes, and a Dorper ram, Striker is going to be 3 this spring. We are so proud to have him.
I still have 7 little Pygmy and Nigerian Dwarf ewes, 6 of which are bred and expecting from mid month to mid March, and My Shadow, my Pygmy bottle baby 2 yr old buck.
I have 4 large breed goats and am still looking for a LaMancha buck for them.
My plans are to deliver the Pygmy & Nigerian Dwarf kids, sell them as bottle babies, then sell the does and my little buck and just go with the larger breeds of Nubians, LaManchas, and crossbreeds.

I have so many ideas running around in my head. Things I want to do still, things I want to accomplish.
I would just like to build a 8ft wall around my property and paint the outside of the fence that purple No Trespassing color and become so self sufficient I didn't have to go anywhere to get foods. Make a trip to town just 4 times a year. Wouldn't that be awesome? I've been told I'm anti social.............LOL go figure.
I really hope to grow corn this year that will help me feed the birds I raise for our food and eggs as well as the other animals. Not to mention the little chicks, ducklings, gooslings and turkey poults I sell each summer.
I'll have several bottle babies kids early this year for sell. In Pygmy and Pygmy/Nigerian Dwarf breeds. My two Nigerian Dwarfs both have blue eyes. I'm hoping that the babies have the blue eyes too. After all the bottle babies are sold I'll be selling (for sure) the does and possibily the little buck I have left.
I'll also have several Katahdin/Dorper cross lambs for sale and feeder piglets in late spring and meat rabbit bunnies.
So with those in mind 2011 is looking to shape up to be a very nice year.
I hope that 2011 is for all of my children and friends too. I love you guys and appreciate all you do to help me keep sane the last 2 yrs, 7 months, & 27 days. Not to mention the year before when we were dealing with everything Rocky went thru.

2011 New Year/ New Dreams
Hi all,
We're finally starting to show a profit for all the work we've put into the farm.
I sold several of our kid goats and three lambs the other night with another ram lamb being picked up yesterday.
It was so great to be able to deposit that money into our farm account.
I've decided to concentrate on raising the hair sheep breeds. I have 7 Katahdin ewes, 2 are yearlings, and a gorgeous Dorper ram. I hope to have lambs out of him by this coming spring.
I'm still looking for St. Croix sheep to add those bloodlines to my herd.
I still have a few Toulouse and American Buff geese I would like to sell or trade for Pilgrim geese.
My gilt should be having her piglets in early April so if anyone is interested in great feeder piglets let me know.
I am also planning on going into the large breed dairy goats to start milking for the fresh milk.
A goal is to find a dairy (Jersey) cow that I can hand milk for us to have fresh milk for making butter and cheese as well as wholesome milk for us and the animals.
